Green energy leader ReNew is set to launch a ₹22,000 crore renewable energy project in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, marking a major milestone in India’s clean energy transition. The facility, which will be inaugurated on May 16 in the presence of State Industries Minister Nara Lokesh, is being touted as India’s largest renewable energy complex at a single location.

The project will have a total generation capacity of 2.5 GW and will include a 1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), developed in two phases. The first phase, requiring an investment of around ₹14,000 crore, will comprise 500 MW each of solar and wind energy, along with the full 1 GWh of storage. The second phase will add another 1 GW of capacity (500 MW solar and 500 MW wind) at a cost of approximately ₹8,000 crore.

This initiative is among the first major investments following the rollout of Andhra Pradesh’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy in October 2024, which aims to attract clean energy investments through fast-tracked approvals and incentives. Since the policy’s launch, the state has received investment proposals worth nearly ₹4 trillion from leading domestic and global players, including Tata Power, NTPC Green, Vedanta’s Serentica, SAEL Industries, and Brookfield.

ReNew’s Anantapur project also marks the company’s return to Andhra Pradesh after a five-year gap, during which previous power-purchase agreements were cancelled under the earlier administration. ReNew had once held one of the largest renewable portfolios in the state, with a capacity of 777 MW.

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) estimates 86 GW of renewable potential in South India, with Andhra Pradesh contributing about 51 GW — notably 20 GW in Anantapur, 23 GW in Kurnool, and 8 GW in Kadapa.

Sumant Sinha, Chairman and CEO of ReNew, highlighted the state’s new policy environment as a key factor behind the company’s renewed commitment. “The state government has come out with very progressive policies and streamlined processes to enable the development of large-scale clean energy capacities,” he said, adding that ReNew intends to deepen its investments in the state.
